Quatro Chikas vs Espana Sistema

hola mis amigos!

boy oh boy was yesterday a whirlwind of a day... for most of it it seriously felt like us against the spanish system.

(which explains the title of the blog, which translates to 4 Girls vs Spanish System, if you haven't figured it out yet)

so let me tell you about it...

the day before yesterday, Paulina Livia and I met our non-english speaking front desk lady, whom from now on will be referred to as the Dragon Lady. Slightly anal, she wanted to make sure that only 2 of us were staying at the Bonanova Hotel... which wasn't the case really but we thought that we could beat the system when we booked online months ago. So ok, we sorted the rooming situation the day before with our much preferred front desk helper called Chico. According to Chico, everything was sorted and smooth.

so YESTERDAY MORNING, while the three of us innocently climbed down the flights of stairs to the breakfast room, we were greeted with the glaring eyes of Dragon Lady, who proceeded to welcome us by firing questions of why the three of us were coming down the stairs when only two of us were only supposed to be there. I cannot beging to tell you how stressful it was trying to communicate with that lady... i mean, who puts a non-english speaking lady in the front desk during the day shift?!?!?! really... come on. Well, after a long spell of us trying to figure out what each other were saying, we cleared things with the Dragon Lady (apparently when she wrote the numbers 207 on the paper, she meant ROOM 207 instad of "additional 207euros" for the addition of me). By the time we moved everything from one room to another, we were already late to meet up Fiona!

With Fiona, the 4 of us tried to tackle the Spanish phone providers. Since the 4 of us have never really done pay-as-you-go in Vancouver, we were already at a disadvantage. Luckily, vodaphone had an english service rep... Unluckily however, vodaphone was the ONLY phone providor we visited that day that had an english service rep, save for Studentsphone.com. Studentsphone.com is a company that handles short term phone plans for students or short term residences in barcelona. According to past Esade students, Studentphone.com was a saving grace, even going as far as setting them up with living arrangements too sometimes. Sounds good right? well, we'll come back to Studentphone.com later.

Having had enough to try and figure out the phone situation in BCN, the four of us scurried across town to meet up with Lulu - agent lady. Once there, we realized were weren't the only ones looking at the apartment. In fact, Lulu triple booked us!! The other parties being skinny blonde Scandinavian models and the others being two guys. The guys bowed out early in the game since the apartment was a touch feminine for them, but the other girls were interested in it!! Gah, after a quick compare and contrast analysis between this apartment with the two others we saw yesterday, we decided to make an offer. Well, they made an offer too... woot woot.

Three canadian students looking to rent for 4 months
vs
Three scandinavian models renting for up to a year....
gee i wonder who the russian owners chose? :P

So in any case, we're the runners up for that spot after the scandinavians.

Remember how i mentioned Studentphone.com? well, after meeting with Lulu, we ventured and found studentsphone.com, except we found out that they weren't open until monday... needless to say, we'll get our numbers on tomorrow.

(ps, thanks for keeping all your fingers crossed for us!)

well, after our dejected trip to studentsphone, we ventured across the street... and suddenly, things decided to sunny up. Well, literally it was already grossly hot and we were all sweaty (as you will see from the pictures) but we found the famous barcelona music hall! It was gorgeous!!

haha! finally the Spanish System seemed alright with us (probably because it figured we suffered through enough in the day). We went to la Boqueria, the market right off Las Ramblas... which is similar to Granville Island at home. What an experience!!!!! There was everything available there, breads, cheese, meats, juices, candy, fruits, veggies... so the 4 of us circled el marcat and picked up a small picnic to bring to the beach -- really, I'm not kidding, the market made the whole day better!

and to the beach (el playa) we go! It was just what we needed, it was sunny and not stifling hot, but just hot enough... there was a small breeze and the beer vendors were plentiful. And while we didn't get to the swiming part, we dipped our feetsies in the mediterranian sea!!!

wait, let me say that again:

WE DIPPED OUR FEETSIES IN THE MEDITERRANIAN SEA!!!!

la vida es buena. :)

The night ended off wonderfully as we ventured our way to the Magical Fountains at Montjuic. Surrounded by museums and even more fountains, the Magical Fountain over powered everything as the waterworks synced up with music. Showtimes were once every 30 minutes, and they even played a set of Spanish Disney songs!!! We were super duper careful of our purses and made it from one side of the fountain to the other and admired the city and the musuems at night. The crowd there was ridiculous, very comparable to Vancouver fireworks... and imagine this is the crowd there EVERYNIGHT!!

what made the fountain even more special was the fact that Spain is currently going through a major drought, so the only fountain working was the Magical Fountain.

So today is sunday... and nothing is opened, which lends me more time to blog and keep you up to date, but the camera with all the pictures and stuff is being charged, so I'll post pictures once I get them!

Until then,

K... on behalf of everyone here.

The Arrival!

Hello all!!!

the three of us have finally made it to Barcelona and are currently sitting on our beds sharing a baguette, cheese and jam. It's been a long day of house hunting and our minds are totally blown. We traveled up and down Barcelona and got thundered by the spanish language.

Picture this: walking into a office where two men wait for you at the head honcho's table and endlessly spew out spanish... and they're spewing it out to you FAST!!! and no one knows english, so there was a lot of confusion from us. by the end of that visit, our heads were aching and there was nothing we wanted to do more than to come back and relax again before going out to see Fiona.

we're looking at a couple more places tomorrow, so wish us luck!

that's it for now :)

2 days to go...

Can you say... eeek! I can't believe Wednesday is almost here. I'm spending the rest of today running around and then having a nice little dinner at Whineos (clearly the only venue choice I could have made). Packing has of course yet to start, no surprise there. Steph is being awesome and lending me her travel backpack from her days in South America, so I will be rocking that tomorrow.

Last night we had family friends from Poland over and one of the guys had lived in Barcelona for about 4 years. Needless to say, he had more than one story to sure. I am know prepared with a list of all the "must-go-to-eat" places and some other fun tips, such as, if I ever crave a really good American-style burger and fries, I have to hit up the restaurant at the Marriot. I also have a handful of phone numbers of their friends from Barcelona, that officially have committed to being our "parents-but-a-lot-cooler-away-from-home-parents"- I'm literally quoting them. It will be nice to stop by for a home cooked meal once in a while though.

Also talked to one of my girlfriends from Germany (Christine) and she is being very wonderful and going to host for a bit and then heading over to Munich with her for Oktoberfest! The plane/train tickets are a bit pricey, but really... when am I going to be in Europe for a beer festival soon? Very excited...

My new camera just came in the other day, so look for more pics coming soon... Possibly even from the airport, you know it! Talking about the airport, Andy and I found out the other day that we are on the same flight together to Frankfurt! We're going different directions afterwards, but it will be a nice start to this crazy adventure...

Aug. 15: 14 day count down.

Hola!

Well, I'm doing a slightly bad thing right now (ie, typing this during my work hours at Aquent), but I'm sure the team won't care much.... sorry Stephanie, Dan and Michelle!!

but I feel I should catch everyone up since my last post.

So the summer has come and it's been months since the lot of us wrote our last exam at UBC... we've found jobs, tried to save money and instead found numerous outlets to spend it all.  We've left the city, soaked up the sun and even endured weeks of good ol' Vancouver rain.

And now it's time to move on...

which means less of:

and more of:

barcelona.jpg

and not to mention:

oktoberfest-tours.jpg

(oktoberfest.... YES!!!!)

keep up with us! because this blog is about to get wild!!!

A little taste of Barcelona, tonight...

Although this is I'm sure the first of many, it just feels right to end the term at Lola's. No doubt that we have all enjoyed our fair share of nights there, Liv's even had her bday there! So to celebrate being done for the next 8 months (for some, only 4, but a celebration is still in order), we bring you...

It's time to get messy. Lola's style...

See you there :)

Papá Ko <3 PVR

Merry Sunday evenings!

I spent the yesterday night back home con mi familia and to my suprise, my dad saved me two programs about Barcelona!

The first one is called Made in Spain and it's host Jose taught the viewers (so pretty much my papá and I) how to make simple tapas, enjoy cavas (Catalunya's sparkling wine), and most importantly, all the great yummy places in Catalunya!

The second one is called Smart Travels in Barcelona and Costa Brava with Rudy Maxa. While that program wasn't as tasty as the first, it did mention some pretty neat places the girls and I will be visiting when we first get to Barcelona and are still in "tourist" mode.

So to summarize and recap the two shows, here's my list of attractions the girls and I will be awesoming when we get there:

La Boqueria Market
Pretty much, it's Granville Island Market, minus the island. It's totally wicked, stocked with tapas food courts, fresh produce and seafood!

El Bulli
Ok... this 3-Star Michelin restaurant that features dishes done on molecular gastronomy. The picture is one of the courses.. which is tomato couscous with with oil olives and basil and parmasean water... well the parmasean water isn't shown. El Bulli is quite possibly regarded as one of the hottest restaurants in Europe, if not the world... I mean, how else can you explain the fact that this place is already. No, seriously... I tried making reservations to this place but I couldn't since they've been booked out since probably the beginning of the year. According to wikipedia, El Bulli accomodates only 8000 diners a season, and over 800,000 diners call and try to get a seat! GAH! Way to go Ferran for making this place such a big hit!
**** Update 04.21.08 **** so apparently my cous-cous picture (above) is considered unappealing and unappetizing... and hence to satisfy the palettes of my friends, here's a few more pictures:

Foamy Margharita... I can't really figure out how you'd drink that just yet.

As you can tell... tiny portions, but there's many courses to make up for it!

Gelateria Xocolateria Santa Clara
(sorry no link on this one)
Apparently, Catalans enjoy thick chocolatey drinks and churros... aptly named "chocolate con churros" in espanol. :) The place is also really close the Barca football stadium.

The Ramblas

woot woot!!! it's the big central strip in Barcelona!!! lots of shopping and eating here!!! Also right beside the Barri Gotic (Gothic Quarter)... so to parallel it to Vancouver: Las Ramblas = Robson... Barri Gotic = Gastown!

Park Guell
Designed by Antonio Gaudi, I'll probably be spending a lot of my time here... sooo many tiles! Apparently the story is, people would donate Antonio Gaudi their sets of dishes or whatever and Gaudi would break it and try to put it all together in the park. It just looks so relaxing and sunny there.

Alright, that's enough from me tonight.

Keep up with me,

xoxo K

Because studying for exams is clearly not enticing enough....

Hola amigos!

It's our second day straight (well, Paulina's 4th day straight) in Irving... and frankly, we've had enough of this nonsense.

So, after going to a fantastic lunch at Banana Leaf, we decided we'd hop on the blog train and start documenting our journey: pre-barcelona, barcelona and post-barcelona.

Keep up with us, because it's going to be loco!

xoxo
